FATAL ATTRACTION

2 Samuel 13:15 Then Amnon hated her with INTENSE HATRED. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, ‘Get up and get out!’

The stories in the bible are not always what we would like them to be. Of all things, we hate to read the possibility of RAPE or INCEST among those who were chosen of God. But…truth be told. The bible stories are the very same stories we read in our modern newspapers or watch in our television screens in the safety of our homes. Everyone…wants to be loved and appreciated for the right reasons, and by the right person in different ways. No-one wants to be loved by a brother…not as a sister but as a lover! NO-ONE. Absolutely, no-one. But that’s exactly what happened to Tamar, King David’s daughter. David had several wives…hence, Tamar and Amnon had different mothers, but the same father. So in reality, they shared the same blood.

But that fact did not stop Amnon from falling in love with his half-sister, Tamar. Moreover, long before this, God has issued instructions about how to behave towards blood relatives in the book of Leviticus of which Amnon was fully aware.

Leviticus 18:6, 9 ‘No-one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord.
‘Do not have sexual relations with your SISTER, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same house or elsewhere.

However, Amnon was too much in love…to think rationally. He was so much into HIS FEELINGS… that he never once stopped to consider the consequences of following after his own heart. Yes…that’s what FATAL ATTRACTION does to anyone. Fatal attraction has no place or feelings for the other person except self. God never meant for you and I to be driven by feelings. Feelings have their rightful place…but feelings are not our guide. Everyone can fall in love….but it takes the brave and mighty to stay and grow in love!

You see…Amnon raped his half-sister, Tamar. Before the act, he thought his love for her was unquenchable…but no sooner was he through with her…did he sent her packing….GET UP AND GET OUT! How so cruel and wicked!!! Isn’t this the working of the enemy. Telling you…that the fruit cannot be missed…only to reach out for the first bite and realized how so empty and naked you are?

And yes….A DATE RAPE...is probably the hardest thing anyone can encounter. Yes, because most of the time, the person who violates you is someone who is well known to you and perhaps even trusted. A close friend, a father, a brother, uncle, name it. How do you approach someone for help with such sensitivity issues? The church has failed on this one. Even though we might like to deny it, DATE RAPE can and happens even within our church walls.

FATAL ATTRACTION is something we ought to teach and warn about. FATAL ATTRACTION is something the church should be ready to pray and deal with, within its wall and outside to the hurting world looking for answers. Paul challenged the Corinthians church about it.

1 Corinthians 5:1-2 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and a king that doesn’t occur even among pagans: A MAN HAS HIS FATHER’S WIFE. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?

Rise up and pray…people!

  2. Wow! Great post. Lust of the eyes is still a problem for us men…even today. Maybe, more especially in today’s “anything goes” media influenced culture.

  3. Gladwell, I love how God leads you to spur us on. There is so much hurting going on, and for it to be happening within the church is so sad. Thank you for tackling delicate subjects in His love! deb

  4. This is so well said, Gladwell. The story is in the Bible to warn us, and to teach us how to be prepared well in advance, even before the enemy comes knocking at our doors. The church, and fathers and mothers, the major gatekeepers of the family, uncles, aunts…school chaplains, youth groups — we all need to know the schemes of the enemy when it comes to “fatal attraction.”

Your posts are so timely, and so sensible. You do have a deep understanding of spiritual things and their application in real life.

Always love what I read whenever I have a chance to visit here!

Thanking God for you and appreciating you…
