MY PORTION OF GRACE

Genesis 43:33 The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment. When the portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, BENJAMIN’S PORTION was FIVE TIMES as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drink freely with him.

We all know the story of Joseph’s reunion with his brothers in Egypt. And while the story is incredible in itself, a perfect example of forgiveness for us to follow, in those few lines above I saw something I had never seen before. BENJAMIN’S PORTION.

But before I expound on this one, let me give you a little background about BENJAMIN.

Benjamin was the second and last son of JACOB AND RACHEL.
Benjamin was given the name Ben-Oni by his mother Rachel but his father changed it to Benjamin.
Benjamin’s birth was difficult and his mother Rachel died immediately after he was born.
Benjamin was born on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem) and his mother was buried there.
But the most important of all these facts is that, BENJAMIN was the only son borne to Jacob after God had changed his name to ISRAEL. In other words, BENJAMIN WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY SON OF ISRAEL.

So here is the truth about Benjamin. Continue reading

A GOOD FRIDAY INDEED!

Hebrews 7:22 Because of this oath, JESUS HAS BECOME THE GUARANTEE OF A BETTER COVENANT.

Today, 2000 years ago…everything changed! No…it wasn’t just change for something new and evolving. But it was a change for eternity. A change which the devil in all his wit and schemes hasn’t seen it coming. No…there was no revolution or insurrection. But…there was a PUBLIC OUTRAGE.

Luke 23:18-20 With ONE VOICE they cried out, ‘Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us! (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. But they kept shouting, ‘CRUCIFY HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!”

And in EXCHANGE for Barabbas…Jesus went to the Cross. And yes…in EXCHANGE FOR YOU AND ME…Jesus went to the Cross. Jesus went to the cross bearing our sin and become our atonement. Therefore, that Friday 2000 years ago become a GOOD FRIDAY INDEED. And today, as we remember that day, I leave you with these words of assurance for your salvation. Continue reading

HOSANNA: BLESSED IS HE…

John 12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “HOSANNA! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!”

Oh…I SEE THE CROWD…IT IS HUGE and growing by the hour! I see…children, young men and women, and the older ones are joining in too. Oh…I see the blind men whose sight were restored…and the lepers who are no longer outcasts.. Oh…I see the one’s who had tested death but Jesus raised them back to life. I see the Samaritan woman and the woman with the issue of blood, the smile on their faces tell their story more than a thousand words. And how can I miss out on the Centurion whose daughter was restored to health and Jesus was so deeply impressed by his faith . I see sane men who were once demon possessed. The shouts and jubilation gets louder. Oh…JERUSALEM has never seen anything like this before. Right there in front of their eyes...HISTORY is in the making. Continue reading

DOES HE KNOW YOUR ADDRESS?

Acts 19:14-15 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day, the evil spirit answered them, ‘JESUS I KNOW and I KNOW ABOUT PAUL, but WHO ARE YOU?

Yes…the question still goes out today. WHO ARE YOU? DO I KNOW YOUR ADDRESS? By reading this above scripture verse, I see a truth which may seem too simple to discern. But I thank God for His Spirit. In Acts 19, we read about Paul’s powerful ministry of the Word and healing for two years in the Province of Asia. In this two years, all the Jews and Greeks living there have become familiar with him. Many believed, others were healed while some with evil spirits were set free. And of course, some curious onlookers among them, the seven sons of Sceva, the Jewish chief priest got interested. Oh, they are not yet followers of THE WAY. But at the look of things…it doesn’t take hard work to invoke in the name of the Lord Jesus to bring relieve to one in need of deliverance…or so it might have seemed. Continue reading

HAS GOD FAILED AT ADVERTISING?

Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed OUR MESSAGE and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

ADVERTISE means to present or praise (goods, services etc) to the public especially in order to encourage sales; to make publicly known. In simpler terms ADVERTISING means sending out a MESSAGE publicly. Hence the above scripture can also read this way:

Who has believed OUR ADVERT and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed.

We all have to agree that in our modern society, ADVERTS have become a part of us almost as natural as the air we breathe. In every corner you turn, there is a form of MESSAGE which is aimed at you. And while advertising is not evil or bad in itself, its the seductive way the message is conveyed that is really the problem. You see, most adverts are directed towards your sensual appetite. What you see, touch, feel, taste and hear.

But why do people advertise in the first place? There are three main reasons;to introduce something new, to stand out as the best among rivals or to be seen as authentic. So did God score well on these three? Oh, if you didn’t know ISAIAH 53 is the grand way God first introduced HIS SON, JESUS to the world. But wait a minute? Why would God, the Creator choose to introduce HIS ONE AND ONLY BELOVED in such a crude, unedited form? If you read Isaiah 53 this in what you will come across;

– He is lacking in BEAUTY OR MAJESTY… nothing we are uncomfortable with.
– He is lacking in APPEARANCE…and of course, he doesn’t fit in our celebrity world.
– He is BEATEN UP and DESPISED..we have no time for the downtrodden in life.
– He is SICKLY and MOURNFUL…we prefer stadiums and theaters than hospital corridors or elderly homes.
– He is UNMANLY and QUIET…we like rebels and advocates of whatever rights.
– He is DEAD and GONE…we go on with our business as if nothing happened.

But I have news for you, what might have seemed like the most UNWISE, NONSTRATEGIC ADVERT of all times became the MOST EFFECTIVE of them all. Because unlike the message of the world, God does not appeal to us through our sensuality, that is (indulgence) but rather through sensitivity, that is (common sense). What you see, hear or read is not necessary what you need, but rather to look closely again at God’s ONE TIME advert. If I am not wrong…You will see yourself…the self you don’t like, the self you are not comfortable with, the self who has known nothing but rejection, the self that is lost in spite of all knowledge. And the most painful truth, the self that is DEAD while still living.

GOD’S ADVERT OF HIS SON...is actually YOU AND ME. He who did not know sin became sin for you and me. So next time, you see an advert what is offering you something better, remember there is ONE who did a good job, once and for all…and then HE CEASED ADVERTISING.

Jesus is THE ONE AND ONLY SON OF GOD; He has NO RIVALS; He is AUTHENTIC. Believe in HIS MESSAGE and live!!!!

HURTING FOR OTHERS

John 11:35 Jesus wept.

EMPATHY…is the power of understanding and imaginatively entering into another person’s feelings. In other words, HURTING FOR OTHERS is empathy. So here we go.

I have heard more times than I could care to count that John 11:35 is the shortest verse in the entire bible. But you see, in the effort to rationalize this verse, the most important lesson can easily be missed: When Jesus wept means more than just tears of sympathy. HIS TEARS SAYS, YOUR PAIN IS MY PAIN. But let’s get the basis of this story.

They are a family of THREE SINGLE ADULTS; the two sisters, Mary and Martha and Lazarus, their brother. They are known to Jesus personally. And yes, Lazarus who is loved by Jesus is lying down in his sickbed. Word is sent out to Jesus that his friend needs him. Instead of going there in time to touch and heal him, he delays on purpose. Oh yes, he was very much aware that Lazarus could soon be dead. Yet when he finally got there, with Lazarus already in the tomb, he wept. For a long time, I was puzzled by this scenario. Why? WHAT MAKES YOU ZEALOUS?

Matthew 21:12-13 Jesus entered the temple area and drove all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the MONEY-CHANGERS and the benches of those SELLING DOVES. ‘It is written,” he said to them, “My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.’ “

ZEAL means fervent or enthusiastic devotion, often extreme or fanatical in nature, as to a religious movement, a political cause, ideal or aspiration.

ZEALOUS means filled with or inspired by intense enthusiasm or zeal; ardent or fervent.

From the above description…I believe everyone has some kind of zeal about something. But for you as a man, WHAT MAKES YOU ZEALOUS? Let’s look from the example of Jesus from today’s scripture. Jesus had just entered Jerusalem in triumph. In fact, the whole city of Jerusalem was STIRRED. In a sense, from outside, the people were zealous for Him. But moment later, Jesus entered the temple area. But no, you will notice he did not receive the same kind of enthusiastic welcome like he did outside.

But wait a minute. Why would the CROWDS outside…on the streets welcome him in triumph and on the same note, those inside the temple show him a cold shoulder? Does it surprise you? Yes, the question still comes across to you. WHAT MAKES YOU ZEALOUS? You might be shocked if I tell you that those in the temple is YOU AND ME. Oh yes….you, the Christian.

You see, those who are outside represent the people who Continue reading

A NAGGING WIFE?

Proverbs 21:9 Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a QUARRELSOME WIFE.

Proverbs 27:15-16 A QUARRELSOME WIFE is like a constant dripping on a rainy day; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil in the hand.

A quarrelsome wife? OR in other words…A NAGGER!

Nag means to scold or annoy CONSTANTLY; to be a CONSTANT source of discomfort or worry; a person, especially a woman, who nags.

Before I start, I need to say this. Do I scold or annoy my husband? That is if you would like to know. YES, I DO!!! But with this difference, I don’t nag him CONSTANTLY. Why, because…I might end up losing him for good.

Here is an example…a personal witness. There are a couple I know, unmarried but living together with three little children. The lady, I can say is an acquaintance. So, one day I ask her why they don’t want to get married and her answers are vague and evasive. It so happens that her partner comes home and as he joins in the conversation, I ask him the same question. Continue reading

FRIENDLY ADVICE

Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the WOUNDS OF A FRIEND, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Years ago, a good family friend took me along with her to a carpentry workshop. Unknown to me at the time, she had ordered for herself a Designer Wall-unit for her living room. So, when we got to the wall-unit section, she proceeded to ask of my opinion on a particular wall-unit which had a few remaining touches to the finish.
‘What do your think of this unit? Do you think I should buy it?’ she asked. And of course, my answer wasn’t what she wanted to her. “No, I don’t like the unit. And I gave her my reasons. Moments later, she made this confession. ‘Anyway, this is the one I have ordered. I will be picking it up in a few days.’ For a few seconds, I felt shocked but no, not upset. Why? Because, I knew that my advice could have been the same had I known from the beginning the unit was hers. You see, she was one of those friends that I could tell the truth without the fear of losing them. And hence, my Continue reading

SUFFERING: A COMPASS TO WHOLENESS

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face TRIALS OF MANY KINDS, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be MATURE and COMPLETE, not lacking anything.

A COMPASS according to Wikipedia is a NAVIGATIONAL INSTRUMENT for determining direction relative to Earth’s magnetic poles.

Suffering for a Christian also works in the same way as the compass. I have heard this question asked over and over again. WHY DO GOOD PEOPLE SUFFER? Or, IS IT NECESSARY FOR A CHILD OF GOD TO GO THROUGH SUFFERING? Before I answer these questions let me put the record straight. SUFFERING is a part and parcel of our everyday life…e.i for the unbeliever and the believer alike.

Psalm 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but TROUBLE AND SORROW for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

But here is the difference. For a believer, suffering is a means to an end and not the end itself. Like the above scripture puts it….trials of many kinds will come to test our faith. And when we have endured suffering, it produces in us, MATURE CHARACTER and makes us COMPLETE or in other words, gives us WHOLENESS! Hence, good people or the child of God will endured suffering because, we live in a fallen world, and secondly God allows us to suffer so that we may also share in the sufferings of Christ and in turn, we will be glorified in Him.

Below are just Continue reading
