Zechariah 7:8-10 And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the WIDOW or the FATHERLESS, the ALIEN or the POOR. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.’

An ADVOCATE according to my Collins dictionary is defined as: to support or recommend publicly; a person who upholds or defends a cause; a person WHO INTERCEDES ON BEHALF OF ANOTHER; a person who pleads his client’s cause in the court of law etc.

Is God your advocate? Do you believe God is well able to intercede or intervene on your behalf against the injustice you are facing? You might not know this….but GOD IS A PROFESSIONAL ADVOCATE! He longs for justice more than you can ever imagine. Long before the professional advocate become a prestigious job…God had made it clear to the children of Israel that He would intercede anytime, and every time when injustice was shown to the four kinds of people in their midst: THE WIDOW, THE FATHERLESS, THE ALIEN AND THE POOR.

In the book of Deuteronomy, we see God commanding the children of Israel on how to deal with these four kinds of people. And in most cases, it was evident that how they dealt with them influenced the outcome of the future events in their lives.

Deuteronomy 10:18-19 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. And you are to LOVE THOSE WHO ARE ALIENS, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.

Deuteronomy 15:11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I COMMAND YOU to be openhanded towards your brothers and towards the POOR and NEEDY in your land.

Deuteronomy 26:12-13 When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, you shall give it to the Levite, the ALIEN, the FATHERLESS and the WIDOW, so they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. Then say to the Lord your God: “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow according to all you COMMANDED.

Centuries down the road, God kept reminding the Israelite that HE WAS STILL THE ADVOCATE of these people.

Isaiah 58: 6-7 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the HUNGRY and to provide for the POOR WANDERER with shelter_ when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own FLESH AND BLOOD?

And Jesus came and added weigh on to the matter. Yes...GOD IS THEIR ADVOCATE;

Matthew 19:20-21 ‘All these I have kept,” the young man said, “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. THEN COME, FOLLOW ME.

Matthew 23:23 ‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices _ mint, dill and cummin. But you have NEGLECTED the more important matters of the law _ justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the latter without neglecting the former.

Today, God is speaking to you and me…as the member of the body of Christ. Do you realise HE IS STILL THEIR ADVOCATE? Are you doing anything to administer justice to the POOR, the WIDOW, the ORPHAN and the ALIEN? You might not realise it…but your breakthrough is very much depended on what your response is to the above matter!!!!

What a great message, Being kind and advocating for those who cannot make it on their own is what we as followers should committ to doing in our daily lives. Thank you for this great reminder. God Bless

  2. Thank you Gladwell! I needed to hear about God being my advocate as well as to hear that He is the advocate of the poor, widow, fatherless and the alien. Praying that I remember them as He does. God bless you, sweet one! deb

  3. A friend of mine once commented that if the Church (the body of Christ) were doing its job in regards to scriptural admonitions to care for the homeless, fatherless, etc. Then we wouldn’t need to have government run social services! The Body of Christ would show the Love of Christ through generous, loving and spirit let care.
Thanks for these words Gladwell. God Bless.

  4. Gladwell,

To know that God is my ADVOCATE gives me great joy and honor…You know why..my case is safe with Him…I know for sure HE will not make any mistakes..

It also reminded me that my attitude towards POOR, the WIDOW, the ORPHAN and the ALIEN, is recorded in His book…and urges me to deal with them better than last time.

    Thank You Gladwell,
