Mark 6:9-11 Wear SANDALS but not an extra tunic. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, SHAKE THE DUST OFF your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.
Dust on my shoes? Are you kidding me? Dusty shoes for the modern, urbanized western man is something which is but a rare occasion. But not for me. Having grown up and spent most of my life in Africa, dust on the shoes is a familiar everyday scenario, which tells the untold story of the traveler. In Jesus’ earthly life, dust too on SANDALED FEET also represented a traveler’s journey. Hence, it was no unfamiliar thing when Jesus sent out his disciples with instructions on how to take care of their SANDALED FEET...that is when they are rejected or opposed to SHAKE THE DUST OFF THEIR FEET.
But what does it mean to SHAKE OFF THE DUST? Let’s first draw a line on what DUST represents. When God created man, that is the first Adam, he created him from the dust. And at the beginning, there was nothing bad about the dust But things changed when the serpent deceived Eve, and she and Adam ate the fruit which God had forbidden.
So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, ‘Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will EAT DUST all the days of your life…” Genesis 3:14.
To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you:….By sweat of your brow you will eat of your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken, FOR DUST YOU ARE AND TO DUST YOU WILL RETURN.
From that point on…DUST represented the FALLEN MAN, THE FOOD OF THE SERPENT AND DEATH…that is the grave. But when Jesus came on earth, as the Last Adam, He came to redeem that which the first Adam had lost to the DUST… that is, RECONCILIATION WITH THE FATHER, THE BREAD OF LIFE and IMMORTALITY. Therefore, when he told the disciples to shake the dust off, he was simply asking then to shake off death, that which was earthly and yes, the desire to please men. They quickly learned that they were nothing but AMBASSADORS OF THINGS ABOVE!
Are you a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ? Has he sent you out on the great commission? If so, then following the instructions: …And with your FEET FITTED with readiness that comes from the GOSPEL OF PEACE. Ephesians 6:15. In other words, do not allow dust to accumulate and make you defiled. KEEP YOUR SHOES POLISHED!
